The Bertha Gxowa Foundation organizes an Annual Outreach Programme in celebration of the lives of senior citizens in KATHORUS (Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus), in Ekurhuleni which is held annually in the first week of December. This is one of the initiatives that are deeply inspired by MaBertha’s work with communities in Ekurhuleni. While Community engagements have starkly highlighted the significant and progressively increasing role of the elderly in weaving social cohesion and stability in the various communities, they also highlighted the endemic hardships experienced by senior citizens in the ordinary course of their lives.
It is for this reason that the Bertha Gxowa Foundation has committed itself to continue with the established practice of hosting senior citizens at a day-long event at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital Hall in Germiston. Every year we host 450 grannies for a lunch, health screenings from the nurses at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital and other activities which honour the role played by senior citizens in our community.
